Who doesn’t want a killer smile? Most people sure do, but having gleaming white teeth isn’t something everybody is born with. Considering the cost of teeth whitening products and dental bleaching procedures, you might be thinking of alternative ways to achieve the smile of your dreams. Thankfully, there are indeed natural—and relatively less expensive—ways to effectively whiten your teeth.

Why do you have stained teeth?

There are a number of reasons you may have yellowish and stained teeth. Each tooth is coated in enamel, and damaging this outer layer will deteriorate the color of your smile. Here are three ways your enamel could be damaged:

Crunchy fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples act as light scrubs that give teeth a clean and polished look. Here are other ways to naturally get a pearly smile:

  • Salt 

Salt is an effective teeth whitener for various reasons. One, it is a mild abrasive that helps remove bits of food and plaque from your teeth. Two, it has antiseptic properties, which means it helps minimize the bacteria that causes a variety of mouth problems, including plaque and bad breath. Finally, salt has bleaching properties that can turn yellowing or discolored teeth whiter after some period of use.

A good way to use salt is to dissolve it in water and use your toothbrush to apply the solution onto your teeth and then let it stay for a while. You may notice your gums starting to hurt, but this is normal as salt tends to absorb water. The solution will raise the alkalinity of your mouth, making it less habitable for plaque-causing bacteria. Rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Once again, salt is naturally abrasive, so use this technique no more than once a week.

  • Calcium

Your teeth are bones made largely of this mineral, so strengthening them by eating food rich in calcium is also a great way to keep them looking white. Calcium gives your enamels a boost, making them less resistant to damage and deterioration, which is a primary cause of yellowed teeth.

Calcium can be found in many food items you will find in your home. These include milk, cheese, eggs, and broccoli. Although not natural, calcium supplements may also be a great option, especially if you cannot have a high enough intake of the mineral.

  • Vitamin D

This nutrient aids your body in absorbing calcium, ensuring that you are able to maximize your gains from your diet. This way, Vitamin D is essential to stronger bones and teeth, as well as sturdier and whiter enamels.

Getting Vitamin D is easy. Your body is designed to produce this vitamin once your skin is exposed to the sun.
