A Veneer is a thin layer of material placed over a tooth to improve or protect its surface. Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain bonded on a patient’s teeth to provide a natural, white and attractive look.
Veneers History
Dental veneers were invented by Charles Pincus, a Californian dentist, who accidentally created veneers as a useful temporary relief for the appearance of an actor’s teeth. In 1982, Simonsen and Calamia revealed that other types of materials can be used and one of these is porcelain. Both have found several discoveries that helped establish more reliable methods in doing dental veneers. Today, cosmetic dentistry has developed and using veneers has been commonplace through the years.
Two types of dental veneers
- Composite resin – One of the one common types of veneers, it is a type of synthetic resin which is used as a restorative material or adhesive. The composition of which consists of Bis-GMA analog and a filler material such as silica.
- Porcelains – The well known type of veneer, it is usually brittle but when firmly bonded to the tooth it becomes stronger and durable.
How’s it placed?
Just like any other dental procedures, patients who want to have veneers should have an impression visit. This is to measure the teeth and make sure that veneers are properly placed. Once measurements are completed, the patient shall go back for placing. Veneers are bonded on the teeth with resin cement.
Purpose and significance of dental veneers
Veneers make cosmetic dentistry popular due to its versatility. It is used to treat wide variety of cosmetic dentistry issues that’s commonly the problem of many patients. It’s significance lies in its ability to protect the tooth or teeth, a solution for severely discolored teeth unresponsive to teeth whitening, a proven solution to chipped, cracked or pitted teeth and minor misalignment or small gaps between teeth.
Cleaning your dental veneers
Just like your regular teeth cleaning routine, veneers should be treated and cleaned like your own teeth. Regular brushing of course is of the essence, use your preferred toothpaste that helps remove food debris and plaques on the surface of teeth. Gargling every after brushing is also needed. Flossing at least once a day is a must. And of course a regular check up and consultation with your Arizona cosmetic dentist about the oral care products and tips to maintain the beauty of your veneers are also needed.
