Impacted Wisdom Tooth: What Causes It?

There comes a point in our lives that we experience one of the most dreaded dental problems known to man, and that is the impacted wisdom tooth. Here are some of the things you need to know about the condition and what to expect in terms of treatment and recovery. If you have such a condition, do not hesitate to contact your Chandler dentist for a checkup and diagnosis.

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the last among adult teeth to emerge from your gums. There are times when these third molars at the back of the mouth do not have ample space to grow normally like other teeth, they get stuck against the tooth beside or in front of it. The teeth then become stuck be at an angle, which is why it is called Chandler dentists as “impacted”.

What kind of problems should patients need to be prepared for?

Common problems that need the supervision and treatment of an experienced Chandler dentists include unerupted wisdom teeth and a lower impacted wisdom tooth.

If part of a wisdom tooth has made itself visible through the gum and the remaining part still is still hidden, it would be a common experience for the patient to have sore and swollen gums. Leftover food particles and bacteria can also accumulate under the edges of the gum, as it would be difficult to clean the affected area. When the gums or surrounding tissues of a wisdom tooth become infected, the condition is called pericoronitis.

Pericoronitis is a temporary problem that can be solved by regularly using a mouthrinse and effective cleaning methods. A Chandler dentist may recommend antibiotics when needed. If the problem becomes recurrent, removal of the wisdom tooth may be performed.

Home Remedies for Inflammation

While a visit to your trusted Chandler dentist is still the best option, gargling medium hot water mixed with a teaspoonful of salt may help alleviate soreness and inflammation of the gums surrounding your impacted wisdom tooth. Swish the solution around your tooth, especially into the areas that your toothbrush cannot reach. Do it several times a day, preferably after meals.

An antibacterial mouthwash that contains chlorhexidine may also help reduce inflammation. You may also take paracetamol tablets for pain, which may be useful for temporary relief, but it is crucial to consult with your Chandler dentist if the pain continues.

See Your Chandler Dentist Immediately If the Pain Does Not Go Away

If the pain is too much for you to bear, such as when you find it difficult to open your mouth, then do not hesitate to see your Chandler dentist. They will be able to see the cause of the problem, and advise you accordingly. It may be useful to clean around the tooth very thoroughly, and an antibiotic may be prescribed.
