6 Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy

6 Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy

When talking about maintaining good oral health, you should not only focus on your teeth but on your gums as well. They also deserve to get special care from you so they can stay healthy and do not cause gum disease. Here are some ways to keep your gums healthy:

1. Brush your teeth properly.

It should take you two minutes to brush your teeth in the morning and another two minutes before you go to bed. Use toothpaste that has fluoride because it effectively eliminates plaque. For the toothbrush, choose the one that has a small head in order to access the difficult-to-reach teeth. Do gentle, circular and scrubbing motions.

2. Opt for toothbrush that has soft bristles.

Toothbrush that has hard bristles can hurt your gums so it is best to buy the one that has soft bristles. Some dentists specifically recommend electric toothbrush to their patients because it effectively cleans teeth and take out plaque.

3. Be watchful of your food intake.

Another way to keep your gums healthy is to watch what you eat. The food you consume, when mixed with bacteria present in your mouth, greatly contribute to dental caries. Eat foods that are rich in calcium like cheese and milk. Calcium is an essential mineral nutrient for the teeth. It is particularly vital for the aging and children during the progress of both baby and adult teeth. As much as you can, do not be tempted with candies, pastries and other sweets. In case you violated the “rule”, rinse your mouth immediately. Or, choose sugar-free or low sugar foods if you really want to have something to munch after every meal.

4. Quit smoking.

Smoking can cause not only stained teeth, bad breath and tooth loss. It may also lead to gum disease.

5. Rinse your mouth after brushing and flossing.

Your mouth is the section of your body that carries the most bacteria; hence, you have to make sure that you clean it appropriately and regularly. But brushing and flossing the teeth is not enough. You have to use mouthwash to rinse your mouth and prevent the accumulation of plaque and bacteria. Some people cannot stand the taste of mouth rinse, however. If you are one of them, you may opt to create your own mouthwash through the use of water and salt.

6. Get easy whenever you floss.

Flossing lets you eliminate food debris and plaque that are stuck in between your teeth. But to make this activity correct, see to it that you use almost 18 inches of floss. Hold it firmly between your forefingers and thumbs. Rub it gently in between your teeth in up-and-down motions. Each time the floss gets to the gum line, lead it to the other tooth until you have reached the rest of your teeth.

Another important way to keep your gums healthy is to visit your dentist in Chandler AZ regularly. He will teach you the proper techniques. He will also make sure that you will not suffer from gum disease.
