Difference Between Corporate and Private Dental Practices

Choosing among different types of dental practices can be a little confusing, especially if it is your first time to set-up a dental appointment on your own, as an adult.

Most patients and individuals have two choices with regard to what type of dental practices can they consult with.

The first kind of practice is a private dental practice. This model of dental services is usually small businesses or dental clinics that are privately-owned and are run by a supervising dentist.

Kyrene Family Dentistry, in Chandler, AZ, is a good example of private dental practice.

The other type of dental practice is the corporate dental approach. There are organizations that belong in the category of Dental Support Organizations or DSOs. These corporations of dental offices employ dentists to practice within the corporation that can be run by individuals who are not dental practitioners.

What remains now is your choice between what approach you would like to commit to? Discussing more these practices would help you determine the best type of dental practice for you.

The Private Dental Practice

A private dental practice can encourage a more personal relationship between the dental practitioner and the patient. Your dentist has more chances to know you personally and in turn, they can provide services that are customized to suit you in all aspects possible.

With privately-owned dental clinics, your treatment decision would exclusively be between you and your dentist only, which means any procedure that your dentist suggests would have a less external influence.

Private dental practices generally have a more established client-base because of the level of the personal connection between the patient and the dental practitioner. This indicates that although new patients are imperative to have an ongoing dental practice, private dental practices might give more priority to their pre-existing clientele.

Corporate Practice or DSO

Corporate dental offices hire more than one dentist and hygienist. While this might hinder a more personal dentist-patient relationship, it increases the chances of the patients getting appointments.

By having more dental practitioners available, emergency procedures may immediately be pursued. Even if your main dentist is out all of your records would be within the company and they can then recommend you immediately to a different practitioner.

From the clinical perspective, both dental practices would roughly have the same quality of care and services. It is good to know that both types of dental practices are staffed by hygienists and dentists that are held to the same standards for them to legally practice in their respective states.

All of them are required to have the same training, certificates, and educational attainment, like DMD/DDS degrees.

Both practices would have their respective advantages and disadvantages over each other. It is good for the patient to identify which practice suits their lifestyle and decision-making process.
